Tribute to Clarence Mitchell III

Clarence Mitchell III was born into a famous family. The Mitchells of Baltimore were often referred to as the Black Kennedys. 

His father, Clarence Mitchell Sr. was Washington lobbyist for the NAACP when many of the most important civil rights laws were passed. His mother, Juanita Jackson Mitchell, was the voice of civil rights in Baltimore. His grandmother, Lilly May Carroll Jackson was head of the local NAACP for more than 30 years. 

Expectations for him were high. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor at the age of 30. 

He did not win, but he had been elected earlier to the Maryland House of Delegates, He also served in the state Senate. His height and rolling baritone voice made him a formidable speaker.

He was remembered today as a passionate advocate for equal justice and for the disadvantaged.
