Pope Benedict to resign later this month

Pope Benedict will resign on February 28, barely eight years after being named to the office, a number of news outlets are reporting.

A Vatican spokesman said the 85-year-old pontiff will step down for health reasons. A conclave of the church’s cardinals will be called in Rome to select a new pope.
