Nearly one-third of U.S. homeowners are mortgage free

Real estate market research firm Zillow estimates that nearly one-third of the nation's homeowners have no mortgage, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Those without home debt include a surprisingly high percentage of young people and those who live in relatively affordable regions along with retirees who have paid down their loans.
