Maryland manufacturers top layoff list for 2012

RG Steel’s termination of 1,975 workers when it closed its steel mill in Sparrows Point was the largest layoff in Maryland in 2012.

But the bankrupt steel maker was not the only company to shed manufacturing jobs, the Baltimore Business Journal’s List of the largest layoffs in Maryland shows. The list appears in Friday’s BBJ.

Major manufacturing layoffs also took place in Hagerstown, where Unilever US Inc. closed its ice cream manufacturing plant, putting 420 people out of work. And Hostess…
