Maryland lawmakers consider expanding tax-increment financing

The House Environmental Matters Committee is considering a bill that would expand the use of tax-increment financing, the Daily Record reported.

Cities use TIF to borrow against future tax revenue of real estate projects and pay for necessary improvements such as utilities and street work.

Baltimore has eight TIF districts, but few other Maryland municipalities have used it. The proposed bill would expand the scope of TIF to other jurisdictions to help pay for projects such as parking facilities…
