Governor Martin O’Malley has launched what he called a round of fast-moving conversations with state legislators on a Maryland response to the murder of 20 school children in Connecticut. WYPR’s Karen Hosler filed this report.
Karen Hosler: Long dormant efforts to restrict the sale of military-style weapons in Maryland are being revived in the wake of last week’s Newtown massacre.
Governor Martin O’Malley, who acknowledged he has “never been a fan of guns,” said today he is shaping legislation that would limit access to such weapons, deal with mental health issues and improve school safety.
Governor O'Malley: “There’s something almost in the structure of our country that …causes us to suffer from violence and violent crime. And when an incident like this happens I think it challenges all of us--as the president has called us to be challenged--to ask what more we can do.”
Hosler: I’m Karen Hosler, reporting from Annapolis, for 88.1, WYPR
