While some have touted a ban on assault weapons and large clips of ammunition as a way to prevent tragedies like the one that took the lives of 20 children at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, Delegate Tony O’Donnell, the House minority leader said that only raises false hopes.
“We have to look at comprehensive solutions, not old things that people have been kind of keeping it in their back pocket for years because they couldn’t get it politically passed and now throw them out on the table as if they’re going to solve something.”
The idea of treating a gun control bill as if it’s the answer is ridiculous, he said.
But earlier in the day Governor Martin O’Malley told reporters he is looking at something more comprehensive.
“We’re crafting legislation that will address the security in our schools and also the linkage between mental health and public safety, which is not as tight as it should be anyplace.”
That would go along with the assault weapons ban, he said.
