Congress calls Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE a threat

Monday, October 8, 2012 - 14:18

The head office of Chinese telecom giant Huawei in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong province.

Congress issued a warning today about two Chinese telecommunications companies that are hoping to expand their reach in the United States.

The warning came as part of a bi-partisan report (PDF) from the House Intelligence Committee that investigated claims that Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corporation were being used by the Chinese government to steal trade secrets and personal information from American citizens.

Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) chairs the House Intelligence Committee, which is calling for an investigation into the Chinese telecommunications companies. Rogers has called the Chinese companies a "serious threat" for the future of the United States:

China for years has been conducting these huge operations on cyber-espionage that really is working to steal the next generation of economic prosperity for Americans.
