Maryland Morning - The War at Home
The War at Home: Maryland and the Iraq War
In March of 2009, for the 6th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Maryland Morning talked to four different Marylanders about the effects of the invasion. These are their stories.

Honorably Discharged...into a Recession
(8:30)
Retired Spc. Lawrence Towles, a 23-year-old Iraq veteran from the eastern shore, started applying for jobs after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army last August. He says he has yet to hear back from anyone. Towles' wife is due to have their first baby this summer, and he hopes that he'll land a job as a prison guard by then and can move out of his in-laws' Deal Island home.

More of Spc. Towless story:
This is my K2500 1989 GMC Suburban
I've just compiled all the pictures from the time I was in Iraq
I love my AK

From Baghdad to Baltimore
(10:28)
Sawsan is an Iraqi pharmacist who began doing humanitarian work in her country right after the start of the war; she said she was inspired by the potential she saw to make a positive impact. That work, though, made her life in the country dangerous.

More of Sawsan's story:
I didn't want people to be out of medication
Then we saw someone on the TV saying 'They are hitting this area'
I think the moment of Abu Ghraib was the worst moment in my life
The last year I was in Baghdad I had to change my roads when going to work

Cpl. Dale Allan Burger, Jr. in Iraq, Fall 2004

Corporal Dale Allan Burger, Jr.
(12:06)
Martina Burger remembers her son, Corporal Dale Allan Burger, Jr.

More of Martina Burger's story:
He would play soldier
'Mom, I'm almost there, I'm gonna be a Marine'
In East Timor the Marines had a good will mission to do...to rebuild a school
He got wounded that week before he got killed
I feel that Dale would have the same hard time dealing with the trauma of war

A View from Afar
(10:54)
In this segment, we take a step back from stories of Marylanders personally affected by the invasion of Iraq and look at the impact of the conflict on the region. Dr. Gilbert Burnham is co-director of the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response at Johns Hopkins.
