Swimmer Jessica Long.The Olympics are over--but there are still world renowned athletes to watch.  Next week in London, the Paralympics begin.  They’re a series of international sporting events in which the competitors have physical disabilities.



8-10-12: Mr. Phelps Goes to London

Should women with especially high levels of testosterone be able to compete at the Olympics with their female counterparts? Or should a double amputee who runs on prosthetic blades be able to compete with able-bodied runners, or does the use of prosthesis give an unfair advantage? We look at the International Olympic Committee’s decisions when it comes to gender testing and the use of prosthesis in sport with Midday’s doctor-in-residence John Cmar. Also, an explanation of the newly approved HIV prevention drug Truvada.

Caroline Queen grew up paddling the streams of Montgomery County. Now she's taken her oar to London as a member of the U.S. Olympic kayaking team. We ask her how she's assessing the course ahead.

Kayaker Caroline Queen grew up paddling the streams of Montgomery County.  She first picked up an oar at Valley Mill Camp in Darnestown at age 9, and hasn’t put it down in the 11 years since. Now, at 20, she’s the sole American woman representing the US at the London Games as a slalom kayaker.

Image courtesy of Creative Commons / elana's pantryWhether you're an Olympic athlete, a marathoner, or just thinking about running a couple miles, you're going to need food to fuel your body.  But what should you eat?  When, and how much?  Lots of extra carbs, or just the regular amount?  Is gatorade worth the purchase?
