Making Morgan Park and Wilson Park Household Names

Many of Baltimore's neighborhoods draw visitors from outside the city, even outside the state to view rowhomes, historic churches, monuments, and other architecturally significant sites. 

But in northeast Baltimore, just outside of the boundaries of Morgan State University, sit two early African-American neighborhoods not nearly so well-known.

In Baltimore, tensions between some universities and residents of the communties that surround them have lingered for generations. Morgan State University officials are aware of that tension and are making steps to address pre-existing divides.

August Wilson’s play, “Jitney,” stars a gruff, disenchanted cab dispatcher named Becker.  Actor Roscoe Orman plays the part expertly, and that’s a testament to his theatrical range:  He’s best known to the world as ‘Gordon’ from Sesame Street.  We drop in at a rehearsal with Mr. Orman and the rest of the cast as they prepare to stage Morgan State University’s production of “Jitney”
