Today is the premiere of "The Lines Between Us," Maryland Morning's year-long multimedia exploration of inequality in the Baltimore region. We start with an essay from senior producer Lawrence Lanahan. Lawrence came up with the idea for this series; in the essay, he explains why he feels a sustained conversation about inequality in the Baltimore region is necessary.

Then, Pikesville resident Sheldon Caplis shares a personal story from 1964, when a family secret came to light and permanently shaped his approach to race relations.

John Wesby is a 36-year-old Philadelphia native who lives with his wife and three children in the neighborhood of Patterson Park. Wesby and his wife moved just East of the park in August of 2007. Despite the attractive real estate, his dream house's block suffered from "an open air drug market," and a handful of abandoned properties tarnished the curb appeal.

This Friday, we'll have stories on the air about how the federal government defines "communities of opportunity" in the region, how one Pikesville man's views on race were shaped by the revelation of a family secret in 1964, and how residential segregation took root block by block during the mid-20th century.
