How Sequestration is Forcing Layoffs in Maryland

The across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration went into effect more than a month ago.  Some have been delayed—the Federal Aviation Administration announced it’s waiting until mid-June to close air traffic control towers around the country, including five in Maryland.  And the number of furlough days for civilian employees of the Department of Defense has been reduced by about a third.

Governor Martin O’Malley is on a “Jobs and Opportunity” tour of the state: this afternoon at the BioTechnical Institute of Maryland in Baltimore, tomorrow visiting a “Pitch Across Maryland” campaign that gives advice to business start-ups.



8-3-12: The Unemployment Situation

Meanwhile, about two weeks ago, the Maryland unemployment report for June came out, showing that the state lost about 11,000 jobs in that month, up from the month before.
