Genie Wishes, Crownsville Cemetery, and ‘Human Cargo’

We talk with Elisabeth Dahl about her new book, “Genie Wishes.” It tells the story of a young girl navigating the murky waters between childhood and adolescence as she embarks on her 5th grade year.

We visit a nearly forgotten cemetery on the grounds of the now-shuttered Crownsville State Hospital, where patients buried their own.  Historian Janice Hayes-Williams walks us through the gravesite, and tells the story of the institution originally named, ‘The Hospital for the Negro Insane.’  We also talk with Paul Lurz, who worked inside Crownsville for 40 years.

Holocaust Remembrance Day - Yom Hashoah - begins Sunday evening, April 7th, and continues through Monday until sundown.  Writer Eric D Goodman joins us to observe the somber occasion with a short story.  It’s the story of a survivor – and that survivor’s memories – so please be advised that the following does include some grim details.

Mina Cheon’s “Polipop & Paintings,” Pierce’s Park, fiction from Eric D Goodman, and a Stoop story from Susan Kim

May 4th & 5th, 2012, on The Signal… Pop Art collides with politics at a new Maryland Art Place exhibition of digital paintings by Mina Cheon. We talk with the artist about her unlikely blend of fanciful imagery and serious geopolitical content. We pay a visit to Pierce’s Park, a new public green space and memorial garden located on the Baltimore waterfront. Fiction writer Eric D Goodman joins us with another radio installment of his novel-in-stories, “Tracks,” a peek into the private lives of passengers on a train-ride from Baltimore to Chicago.

The Signal, 1.13.12 & 1.14.12, B-Grant award winners, the Charm City LGBT Film Festival, and fiction from Eric D Goodman

Marcia Woolfson Ray builds sculpture from Dog Fennel and cornstalks; Ellen Durkan forges tempered steel into sci-fi meta-fashion; and Ed Hough strums the guitar in the band Smooth Kentucky.  These three artists are as different as can be, but they’ve got one thing in common:  This week, they each earned a thousand-dollar B Grant from the Baker Artist Award website, and we pay them a congratulatory visit.
