Starting From Scratch: Refugees Rebuild Lives in Baltimore

Dec 23 2011 - 8:48am

Some 2,000 refugees are starting new lives in Baltimore’s Frankford neighborhood… but they’ve been increasingly caught in the crossfire of drug wars. This past year, a rash of crimes against new arrivals came to a head in August, when a young Bhutanese man was shot and killed. Police, refugees, and resettlement workers had already been working together, but the killing focused their efforts. WYPR’s Mary Wiltenburg reports, as part of our occasional series, “Starting From Scratch: Refugees Rebuilding Lives in Baltimore.”

Crime against refugees in Baltimore has been on the rise. This past spring and summer, newcomers in Frankford were routinely targets of drug-related robberies and other crimes. Police, refugee workers, apartment managers, and community members were starting to work together to change that – when tragedy struck. WYPR’s Mary Wiltenburg reports, as part of our occasional series, “Starting From Scratch: Refugees Rebuilding Lives in Baltimore.”

Last year, about 73-thousand people were admitted to the U.S. as refugees. Most were from Iraq, Burma and Bhutan and were fleeing some sort of persecution in their homeland. When they arrive in the U.S., some refugees have several suitcases full of possessions. Others arrive with not much more than the clothes they’re wearing. All of them are expected to find work as quickly as possible. That isn’t always easy. WYPR’s Sarah Richards files this report.

In America, soccer only catches our collective attention when a US team competes in the World Cup. But, for some young Baltimore refugees, soccer is life. It’s one of the few things they were able to take with them from their native countries. For the first story in our series, “Starting From Scratch: Refugees Rebuild Lives in Baltimore,” WYPR’s Matt Purdy joined a youth refugee soccer team on the field and filed this report.
