But for all the fancy hats and Black-eyed Susans, Maryland’s thoroughbred horse industry remains deeply troubled as track owners continue their squabble over slots. In the world of horse racing, the call that horses are coming down the stretch is the most thrilling moment of the contest. It signals that horse and jockey are giving their all in the race’s final moments to determine supremacy where seven-figure sums could be on the line. But as Maryland prepares to throw its annual Preakness celebration at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, the term “down the stretch,” takes on a more ominous meaning in light of the industry’s many challenges.
