After a campaign that generated only minimal interest, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake coasted to an easy victory in the Democratic primary yesterday with more than 50 percent of the vote, despite a disappointing turnout of barely 20 percent of registered voters. And in Baltimore, winning the Democratic nomination is tantamount to winning the election. WYPR’s Joel McCord reports.

When the polls opened in Baltimore city this morning, only a trickle of voters came forth to cast ballots in the primary that could effectively decide who will be the city’s next mayor and city council. Given the anemic totals through six days of early voting, Baltimore could be on the verge of setting a historic low for voter turnout. WYPR’s Sunni Khalid filed this report.

Voters in Baltimore went to the polls Tuesday in this year’s all-important Democratic primary. In City Hall, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake sought an electoral mandate to the post she inherited 18 months ago, facing a host of challengers. The City Council was also up for grabs. Fraser Smith, WYPR’s Senior News Analyst, hosted “City Primary 2011,” an hour-long discussion of this year’s primary election. Three guests – Julie Scharper and Jean Marbella of The Sun and Charles Robinson of Maryland Public TV – joined Fraser to discuss the campaigns, issues, ideas and tactics.

The Baltimore Election Board’s website has gotten high marks from a nationally renowned good-government group. For more than a century, the "Committee of 70" has pushed for fair and well-run elections in Philadelphia. As we head in to the primary election tomorrow, WYPR’s Mike Adams asked Ellen Kaplan, the group’s policy director, about the merits of Baltimore’s election website.
