The House of Delegates gave preliminary approval last night to the same budget package the Senate approved earlier in the day and pit bull owners rallied outside the State House to support bills to overturn a recent Court of Appeals finding that their dogs are “inherently dangerous.” WYPR’s Joel McCord is in Annapolis reporting on the special session, and brings us the latest.

Maryland law makers heard it from both sides yesterday in the first day of their special session to address budget issues left unresolved at the end of their regular session in April. At the heart of the fight is a proposal to increase some income tax rates. WYPR’s Joel McCord reports.

Cyrus Jones Jr., a senior at the Gilman School, will play football for the defending National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide next year. His father, Cyrus Jones Sr., has won three recent state championships as the head coach of East Baltimore’s legendary Dunbar High School basketball program. WYPR’s Ali Danois was recently on Gilman’s campus, talking with the accomplished father, a counselor with the state’s division of juvenile services, and decorated son about the choice to attend private school and their thoughts about what lies ahead.

Baltimore city school officials are putting together a committee to come up with a plan for a replacement school for Southside Academy in Baltimore’s Cherry Hill community. School officials, Cherry Hill residents and political leaders are expected to serve on the committee. Southside is set to close in 2013 and as WYPR’s Gwendolyn Glenn reports, Cherry Hill residents want a voice on the committee to make sure a new school meets the community’s needs.

The superintendents of  three of Maryland’s largest school districts sent a letter to state legislators, asking them to restore funding to public education in next week’s special session of the General Assembly. In the letter, Baltimore city school’s CEO Dr. Andres Alonso and the superintendents of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, said the proposed “doomsday” budget cuts to education would devastate their schools. WYPR’s Gwendolyn Glenn reports.
