The NFL’s free agency season began earlier this week and, so far, the Ravens have been losers, with defensive starters Jarrett Johnson and Cory Redding, signing with San Diego and Indianapolis, respectively. Who else will leave? And how will Ravens general manager and vice president Ozzie Newsome and his staff fill the holes? For the first time in 18 years, Loyola University will be dancing in the bonanza known as March Madness. They secured their first NCAA tournament bid under the guidance of eighth year Head Coach Jimmy Patsos with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship victory over Fairfield. The Greyhounds will travel to Pittsburgh for their first-round matchup with the heavily-favored Ohio State Buckeyes on Thursday. WYPR’s Ali Danois was at Loyola for the Selection Sunday festivities and filed this report.

The Baltimore Orioles are expected to struggle again this season, not just on the field, but drawing interest off it. One team that doesn’t have that problem is the Philadelphia Phillies, who are once again expected to contend for the National League pennant. Former Major League player Hank Allen, a scout for the Houston Astros, joined WYPR’s Brian Crompwell, by telephone from Clearwater, Florida.

The NBA has passed the midway point of its lockout-shortened season, with many of the early favorites atop the division standings. Still, teams like the Miami Heat, with superstars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, have recently stumbled on the road. What does this portend for the playoffs? Major League training camps in Florida and Arizona have opened and the first exhibition games are a week away, as the National Pasttime gears up for another season. It is said that hope springs eternal this time of year, but there’s very little optimism for the Baltimore Orioles, who once again finished in last place and made no major offseason acquisitions. Former Major League player Hank Allen, a scout for the Houston Astros, joined David Steele of the Sporting News, for a short preview of spring training.

When the Maryland high school basketball state tournament gets underway on Friday, the most watched player will surely be Patterson High School’s guard Aquille Carr.  A junior, Carr stands just 5-feet-6 inches tall. But his size hasn’t stopped Carr from reaching basketball fame of epic proportions. WYPR contributor Ali Danois spent time with Baltimore’s latest basketball star, and files this report.

As its season approaches the halfway point, the talk of the NBA is not the familiar names like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant or Blake Griffin. It’s a young player who has come from almost complete anonymity to stardom on the biggest stage in barely two weeks’ time.
